OMG was founded by two students of the Fayette Montessori School here in Fayetteville, GA. The founders are Carter (9) and his Sister Olivia (7), who are both extremely passionate about animals and conservation. They have been adopting Cheetahs in South Africa over the past few years and when they heard that Cheetahs, along with so many other species were close to extinction, they knew they had to act.
They started their OneMoreGeneration organization in late 2009 and officially filed with the state of GA as a nonprofit late in January of this year. They have also already applied for their 501 (C)(3) status and are awaiting the confirmation letter from the IRS.
Here is a brief list which spells out just a few of the initiatives both Carter and Olivia have started, which is pretty impressive.
1.Their goal is to raise $50,000.00 by the end of this year to help support the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Rescue in South Africa who has spent the last 40-years tirelessly working towards helping keep Cheetah’s and other endangered animal species, such as the African Wild Dog, Brown Hyena, Servals, Suni Antelope, and Riverine Rabbits from becoming extinct.
2.They have written to our local Governor’s office trying to get Rattlesnake Roundups stopped and legislation amended to allow venomous snakes to be protected under local laws which now exclude venomous snakes.
3.They have also written the Governor’s office to help the Gopher Tortoises who are being senselessly killed via the gassing done by the snake hunters during these roundups.
4.They are in talks with the local Southeastern Reptile Rescue organization about joining forces to help spread the word about how vital snakes and other misunderstood reptiles are to the eco system.
5.They managed to coordinate and gain approval from their school to host the First Annual OMG (OneMoreGeneration) Day which is scheduled for later in May.
6.They have already coordinated with the local nature center (Cochran Mill Nature Center) to attend the OMG Day and to bring a few endangered species along so they can help educate the students on how important these creatures are.
7.During Carter’s ninth Birthday party (in late Feb), he asked all his friends to bring donations to his organization as opposed to gifts. He raised $175.00 which he then sent out to all those organizations who were fighting on behalf of each donor’s favorite species.The list of organizations they are currently working with include:
Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre in South Africa;
The WWF (World Wildlife Fund) in Washington DC.
Big Cat Rescue in Tampa FL
The Center for Biological Diversity in AZ
Georgia University in GA
8.They have just been chosen by the Center for Biological Diversity to be their nonprofit organization to be featured in their Activist Spotlight section of their website.
9.The list of accomplishments/initiatives goes on and on, to include the fact that they had recently secured booth space at the local Conyers Cherry Blossom Festival where they collected over 500 signatures for the “Stop the Rattlesnake Roundups” initiative which will be delivered to Governor Perdue’s office.They also sold Greeting Cards, Tee Shirts, and Jewelry, all hand made by themselves and their friends of OMG to support their cause.
Their goal is to help shed light on the plight of endangered and threatened species, and to show everyone, that anything is possible if you just get up and do something.
